Marco Island City Grassroots Selection Process
Using the GOooh process for selecting City Council candidates does not change the integrity of the process. Only the questions change. ( Click here for the MI questions). These will be available by mid January.
Why do we need GOooh? Why do we need this process on Marco Island? Are you happy with the political process on Marco Island? Is your voice being heard? If you are engaged great. If not, then for many of us it may be our own fault. Few do their homework or educate themselves on the issues. Trust in our government officials is severely lacking and it is a two way street. Locally, we have 12,500 city voters. Voter apathy, anger and frustration are on the rise. Special interests on all sides have become combative and divisive. Our local economy is struggling with foreclosures, business closings and families leaving the Island. Our debt, including General Fund, STRP and Utility requires 31% of our annual budge--just to service our debt. When you couple Marco Island debt, Collier County's $678M and theFederal government debt (funded and unfunded liabilities which are well over $150 Trillion), ALL are unsustainable! The economic model for our future on Marco Island is in serious jeopardy!!
What Is GOooh? The objective is still to offer every one of the 12,500 voters to fill out the questionnaire, which requires a little homework and thought; and then to attend one or two rigorous caucus sessions to select the candidates who will be required to commit in writing to the 25 Questions and values.
There are 4 seats open for this election. Once the citizens, who participate, select 1- 4 candidates then the selected candidate(s) will need to sign a commitment letter to the citizens of Marco Island. This commitment letter says that they will vote the way he or she committed in the selection process on their Questionnaire (accountability) and he/she will not take special interest money from any Political committee or special interest.
The process is designed to return control to the citizen voters; to put educated civil discourse back in play and restore a strong sense of values and trust. Naïve, you say? But if we don’t make the effort them we get what we deserve at every level of government. Our founders and forefathers called it tyranny!
